How It Works
Urban Patchwork is Austin’s first non-profit farm network.
We make local, healthy produce and fresh eggs affordable for everyone on a neighborhood by neighborhood basis while training new farmers to be successful and responsible. We do this by turning unused yard space into farmland that provides fresh, organically grown produce and eggs to the nearby residents of each neighborhood farm.
We not only provide food for our bodies, we offer farm start-up programs; workshops for residents on nutrition, home food production and storage; marketing and job creation; and more.
Austin’s pilot program started in the Crestview neighborhood and is currently expanding to surrounding neighborhoods in the 78757 and Highland Neighborhood areas.
Urban Patchwork offers memberships to a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program as well as offering produce through local markets and businesses. (In a typical CSA, a community of individuals pledges support to a farm operation in advance to cover the anticipated costs of the farm and farmer’s salary. In return, they receive shares in the farm’s bounty as well as satisfaction gained from reconnecting to the land and participating directly in food production.)
As farming programs go, Urban Patchwork is unique since all the farmland is within the boundaries of the urban neighborhoods who choose to participate. Neighborhood residents and businesses host farm plots in their yards in exchange for fresh veggies and other opportunities that reduce cost of living and increase the quality and value of their land and lives.
Volunteers and farmers do all the work to prepare the soil, plant, harvest and deliver fresh produce and eggs on a weekly basis. Land-owners aren’t required to do any of the work or foot the bill for upfront costs.
