Welcome to Urban Patchwork, a neighborhood-based urban farm network deep in the heart of Austin, TX.
We are a neighborhood-based community organization dedicated to providing safe, affordable foods grown close to home while offering farmers job opportunities that help their families and our local economy thrive.
Most fruits and vegetables sold cheaply in grocery stores are designed for their ability to withstand industrial harvesting equipment and extended travel and storage. “Food” is processed beyond recognition and lacks critical nutrients that keep us out of the doctors’ offices.
At the same time that we are learning the true expense of industrialized food, we are busier than ever and paychecks seem to be shrinking. How do we eat fresh, healthy food when costs continue to rise? How do we learn what’s good for us when we’re blasted with so much confusing information from big food industries?
While we worry how and what food will reach our mouths, farmers worry how they will get it to our tables while supporting their own families. 99% of the farming operations in the United States are somehow subsidized by the government which means the farmers are told what they’ll grow and how much they’ll earn each year; which isn’t much. It also means the government is dictating what we eat.
All of that changes when communities work alongside farmers to grow local, fresh vegetables, fruits, eggs and grains right in the city in a way that reduces costs, cares for the environment and provides safe, affordable food for everyone.
Read through the pages of urbanpatchwork.org to learn more about the farm networks, and join us as we connect better with the places we live and the food we eat. Come by for a visit and see what’s growing!
